This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they came to live together she was found to be with child…
In the genealogy of the Jesus, it appears that Mary was no different from other women mentioned in the gospel. If we read it with profound understanding we can dig into its essential role to the salvation history that includes the onset of the life of the Blessed Mother of God. Saints Ann and Joachim, the parents of Mary were said to be infertile but fervently prayed to have given a child. The pious couple was granted a child that played a significant role in perpetuating the profound desire of God to share his life to humankind.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” These words of Isaiah were made manifest in the life of Mary. Her purpose sharpened the abiding presence of God from the inception of her being. She had her own share of travail at an early age. But in her sheer innocence, the grace of God blossomed in her to which her faith strongly anchored. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” Indeed, her whole life is always in reference to God.
Joseph on the other hand, had seen the braveness of this young lady. He had witnessed how the innocent Mary understood her being a gift and determined to remain a gift to all. Thus Joseph vowed to live out the charity that goes beyond that of the scribes and also became a gift to all by taking Mary as her lawful wife.
The birth of the Blessed Mother is a huge blessing to humanity. Her existence cannot be separated from the saving mission of Jesus. St John Eudes boldly said, “Before Jesus was born in Mary’s womb he was born in her mother’s heart”. Saint Augustine said “. “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.”
She had found with a child… but the plan of God must be done in spite of the apparent danger of her own life. The genealogy is showing us how the Son of God became truly human and concretely lived with us. In turn showing us all how the Mother of God, an ordinary person, no different from us, responded to the call of God without reservation.
In her birthday, we can’t set aside the precious gift of God that took flesh in the sacred womb of the blessed Mother, her Son Jesus Christ. The love of these two precious gifts has been embracing us throughout the ages. Mary’s love is so creative thus capable of embracing and loving even those seemingly unlovable individuals in the society. As a Mother, there is no such thing as excess child. Every one of us is well loved by her. She always gives us hope in times where everything is dark. Her birthday will continue to bring inner peace to us her children as we are reminded that an ordinary person can live an extra-ordinary life if we surrender our purpose to our ever-loving God.
Happy birthday Mama Mary!
