Resurrection:  An outpouring of Christ's Life for us!

In the attempt to dialogue with people who do not share the Christian faith and most often those who do not believe in God, the frequently asked question is “What finally has Jesus brought to our humanity?” This question is taken up in the second volume of Jesus of Nazareth of Pope Benedict XVI who said that in spite of the evidence of war, suffering, death and all kind of cruelties in the world Jesus brought God to humankind.  I happen to share this one day with a group, but it was frowned upon by some people.  They could not understand why the Pope declared that Jesus brought God to our humanity as if God was not there before the incarnation.

Celebrating God's Generosity in the Gift of Life that is
St. John Eudes!

St. John Eudes was born on November 14, 1601 in a tiny hamlet called Ri in the Normandy section of France.  He was the eldest of seven children born to Isaac Eudes and Martha Corbin.  As a child he was very pious and interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith.  At first he was instructed by the parish priest and eventually he was able to go to a high school run by the Jesuits.  He heard the Lord calling him to be a priest.  In 1623, God led him to the Oratory of Paris which had just been founded in 1611 by Pierre de Bérulle.  The goal of the Oratory was to be “a school of holiness” for priests at a time when the priesthood in France was in great need of renewal.  It was there that he developed his deep spirituality.

John Eudes spent most of his life preaching parish missions, reaching out to those in need (especially prostitutes, the victims of the plague, and the poor), and working on the formation of priests.  In 1641 he founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity to assist prostitutes who had the desire to reform their lives.  He founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in 1643 precisely to focus on God’s mercy, the preaching of missions and the formation of priests.  His spirituality is best synthesized in the symbol of the Heart of Jesus and Mary.  This heart is full of love and mercy for all people.  The congregations he founded are focused on sharing this message of mercy through their various apostolates.

At the time of his beatification, he was given the title of “Father, Apostle and Doctor of the liturgical devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”  May he continue to inspire his sons and daughters to greater devotion to God and a deeper concern for all those in need.

He had one desire.  To give of himself to Christ and His Church corde magno et animo volenti (with a big heart and a willing spirit).  As we celebrate his birthday, may we honor him by committing ourselves to do the same.

The Congregation Launches its New Website!

The Congregation of Jesus & Mary (Eudists Fathers) launched its new umbrella website last March 25, 2013, the 370th anniversary of its foundation.  Prior to this, the Congregation's presence in the cyberspace was felt through the separate efforts of its various Provinces and Regions.  Hence, the content were limited to the projects, concerns and interests of each locale.  The new website seeks to provide a platform for congregation-wide information dissemination in an increasingly global community.  It is currently available in Spanish.  The French edition is already under construction.  The English and Portuguese versions will follow soon.

Mary Treasures All in Her Heart

The Heart of the Blessed Virgin is the repository and faithful guardian of the marvelous mysteries of the life of our Savior...  Our Lady cherished the mysteries and marvels of her Son's life, in a way, in her material and corporal Heart, the principle of life and seat of love and all the other physical emotions.  All the movements, every beat of this virginal Heart, the material functions that it accomplished and the emotions  that  swayed   it,   existed
