The Pattern of God’s Reign!
Fr. Serg Kabamalan, CJM
Our capacity to recognize things is often dependent on our senses which are more inclined to focus on what is big, loud, visible and tangible. In other words, by what commands attention by their sheer size, brightness or volume! Hence, waylaid to the side are the seemingly unimportant things, the small things, and the ordinary things. That is the way of the world, indifferent and unbelieving of the numinous.
But in the greater scheme of things, everything comes from small beginnings! In fact, if we go by one established theory of our cosmos’ origin, we can say that there was a primeval mustard seed, the repository of Creator’s design that was so infinitesimally small. It contained vast amount of energy concentrated in a point of density and heat that expanded into primeval soup of neutrons, protons, and electrons in high temperature, and then forming galaxies, stars, supernovas, solar systems, planets, comets, asteroids through billions of years in a series of explosion and implosion, giving birth to the great, grand universe that continues to evolve to this day.
Life on earth began with a primeval mustard seed of its own, the single-celled microorganisms which later on evolved into the present day bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. Human life, like all mammals, begins its existence as a zygote (a fertilized egg) in the mother’s womb and develops into a complex, multi-celled organism, which Psalm 8 celebrates as a being “little less than a god.”
In all these, there seems to be a pattern. God’s signature and fingerprints is all over his work: from simple to complex, from singularity to diversity, from one to many. It is no wonder that the Kingdom of God would follow the same mold. God indeed moves through the simple and the ordinary, through the small and seemingly insignificant. The coming of the Epoch of the Divine in the creation did come that way, through a child in the womb of an ordinary woman with extraordinary faith in a small, nondescript village in the margins of the Jewish society, in a small planet at the periphery of a galaxy called, Milky Way. This child, our salvific mustard seed, would grow in age and wisdom, begin his public ministry, and like the proverbial mustard seed growing into a 12 meter high “tree” becoming home and resting place for birds, he would attract people hungry for his words and deeds that not even his passion and death could put a stop to a desire for fulfilment driven by this hunger and thirst already awakened in them.
Two thousand years after its proclamation and inauguration, the Kingdom of God continues to grow and is manifested in the unlikeliest places, in the unlikeliest hearts. There is no stopping its fulfilment contrary to what the worldly powers believe. Individuals, communities and nations will continue to be moved by the deepest desires of their souls which can only be satisfied by the Kingdom of God!
Lord, you are the Kingdom of God – Incarnate, who has already awakened a deep longing for wholeness and happiness in our hearts. Grant us the grace to realize and truly believe that it is only in you that our hunger and thirst may find its satisfaction, that searching for it in you, we may find our True Selves nestled in your Heart! Amen.
