Discernment
Sometimes in our lives we have to face situations that are very important for our lives, such as finding the suitable man or woman to spend our time together, finding the best job, looking and applying for a profession, looking for the best doctor to heal us from our illness or even why not, to discern if we really are called by the Lord for a specific mission in his Church.
These are decisions that are not easy to make. We need to discern. Discernment is a very important tool for making decisions. We can not discern alone. We need the assistance of a person who really knows about the matter.
If I’m looking for a house, the best person who can help me to discern is a real state agent. If I’m intending to travel to some place, what I need is to go to a travel agent. If I’m looking for a car, the best way is to go to a place where they sell cars and ask to the people who work there. Nowadays, is easier to find something even without leaving home. You can access many places through internet.

Talking about vocations, it is good to follow a process of discernment with a priest or a religious to know if really you have a call from God or it’s just a passing whim. There are people who say, “I really made a mistake when choosing my spouse.” Therefore, our unhappiness can be due to a bad discernment .
If you want to discern if you really have vocation, the first thing that you have to do is to ask the Lord in prayer if He really is calling you. I remember when I was first feeling the desire to be a priest. I started by looking up to heaven and I asked him if he really wanted me to be a priest. The answer was given some days later by the Lord. I went to the barber’s and the friend who worked there told me, “Oh José, now that I’m cutting your hair, I can see that you really have a crown of a priest.” I smiled but she didn’t know that I was asking the Lord to answer to my question. He invited me I think through her, but she didn’t know.
Once a teenager told me, “Father, I want to be a priest but I don’t know where or how.” I told him, “don’t worry…just ask God and He will answer you.” Some days later he told me, “Father, I got on a bus and when I was going to sit, I saw on the seat a calendar. I said, oh how nice! I need one. When I turned the card, it had an invitation to call to a telephone number to join a religious community and the picture of the founder was on it.
